Supernova CSGO Press Conference

Malta’s biggest esports tournament, the Supernova CS:GO Malta, is launched

Today, on the 22nd of November, a Press conference was held at the Quickfire esports Centre in St.Julians to further elaborate on the first ever CS:GO Pro Tournament to be held in Malta.

Between the 29th of November and the 2nd of December, 8 teams from all around the world, including China, Russia, Europe and the USA will be competing for a prize pool of $150,000, at the Intercontinental arena.

Simon Decesare, Chief Executive of Eden Leisure Group

“Last year, the Eden Leisure Group acquired a leading stake in the local esports company Quickfire and we have, to date, invested heavily in multiple esports products including an esports centre right here at the Superbowl, multiple LANs at the arena with 200-300 local participants and the hotshots online CS:GO tournaments with over 20k in prize money which generated over 500k unique viewers worldwide.”

The event will be broadcast in 8 different languages including English, Russian, German, Hungarian, Polish, Chinese, Portuguese and Spanish, and broadcast live all over the world.

“We expect this tournament to attract over 5 million unique viewers worldwide and hopefully also a great local audience.”

This is a first in Malta and will open the country up to becoming a leader in the esports events organisation.

Silvio Schembri, Parliament Secretary for the Digital Economy

The sector has a very clear vision of how they want the world of Gaming and esports to develop in Malta.

“We are constantly seeking to extend the Gaming sector into the world of esports, and we are now at a point where we are turning words into facts.”

“When a company such as Eden Leisure Group heavily contributes towards the esports sector, it encourages us to keep on investing and believing in the work and the rewards that this sector can bring to Malta.”

At the moment, the sector is not only working on the events that are upcoming, but also on attracting talent and incentivising teens to expand their talents within this ever-growing sector.

Gavin Gulia, Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority

“We are currently in November and we anticipate 2.6 million tourists to visit the country until the end of 2018, meaning an increase of 300,000 tourists from last year.”

Through such events, Malta will be able to overcome the problem of seasonality which it has previously been faced with.

“Come winter time, we are attracting a different kind of tourist than the one that visits in summer, and the private sector greatly contributes towards this through events such as the Supernova CS:GO Malta.“

This event alone will be attracting around 4,000 people, including participants of the event who really and truly are tourists themselves. Through this event, they will be experiencing Malta from a tourist’s eye.

Malta, through and with this event, will be getting high exposure not only in Europe but also around the world through different social media and streaming channels.

Ivan Filletti, the Chief Executive of Gaming Malta

Gaming Malta aims to position Malta as the home of gaming excellence, and in order to do this, it must take a closer look at the niches within the Gaming industry, especially esports.

Malta is currently at the forefront of a new beginning where the ecosystem of esports is rapidly growing, mainly due to the level of education that is connected to it.  Esports is educating people inside and outside of the sector on how to manage events, amongst other things.

“We encourage the Maltese public and families to attend and experience these tournaments, as that is only when they can realise the potential within the level of organisation and excitement that is held during these tournaments.”

Nicolai Gauci from Quickfire

“On behalf of Quickfire, we’d like to thank Eden Leisure Group for believing in our project and for working hard to make sure that the esports sector takes a professional turn in Malta.”

The event will take place from the 29th of November to the 2nd of December, from 10 am to 10 pm on the first two days.

“We are certain that this event is the first of many we are yet to see on our shores in the upcoming years.“
